Software Goodies What kind of file is that? We know what a .txt file is (a text document). If we've used Microsoft's Word, we know that a .doc file is a Word document. And, working with HTML, we've learned that .html or .htm signifies an HTML document. But what is a .cfm file? Or how about a .mif? Or a .scr file? If you need to know, you can head over to Ext Search and do a search. First some terminology: the characters after the . are often called the file's extension. Hence the site's name Ext Search -- Ext is short for "extension". The site is super easy to use. Just enter the letters of the filename after the . into the search box and click Search. Here's the example with the extension scr. Looking for scr on Ext Search You'll get a result page. The scr search shows that several different kinds of files share the scr extension. Sometimes, the extension has just one file type. And sometimes, the file type is unknown. In that case, the Ext Search Results pages gives you a link to another site to try searching there. Results of Search on scr In the case where you have more than one type of file associated with an extension, you may still be able to determine the file type though a process of elimination. In my scr example, I was looking at a file on a Window's system. That makes it likely that the second choice, Screen Saver for MS Windows, the correct candidate. So if you've got a file and you don't know what it is, try the Ext Search and see if it can answer your question.
